Barbara Lee (James) Stevens

Barbara Lee (James) Stevens was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on March 19, 1940, to Robert I. and Mary (Tanner) James. Barbara departed this life and moved to her permanent residence in Heaven on January 2, 2025, at 9:38 AM in her home, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family. She had attained the age of 84 years, 9 months, and 2 weeks. Barbara graduated from Danville High School in 1958 and went to work at Geisinger Medical Center as a nursing assistant. Barbara was united in marriage to William (Bill) Henry Stevens on May 22, 1965, and they shared over 51 years together, before Bill was promoted to heaven on November 16, 2016. To this union one son and one daughter were born. Bill and Barb lived in Stuart, Florida after they were married, where Bill was employed with Grumman Aerospace Corporation. Barb was employed at Martin Memorial Hospital as a nursing assistant until shortly before her daughter was born, when she became a homemaker. In March 2006, they retired to Milledgeville, Georgia. In October of 2022, Barb moved back to Danville, Pennsylvania to be closer to her beloved sisters and brothers with whom she loved bantering and enjoying time with. Due to declining health, in April of 2024, Barb moved in with her son and daughter-in-law in St. Robert, Missouri. She quickly adjusted to the change and became a favorite of the large extended family in Missouri. She faithfully attended Cedar Bluff Baptist Church until her health prevented her from doing so. Barbara enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, playing Cribbage, Hand and Foot, and other card games, going to the theater, camping and fishing, serving at the soup kitchen in Milledgeville, Georgia and the mission in Danville, Pennsylvania, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Barbara faced her terminal diagnosis with courage and peace of spirit. Barbara told her family, “Everything is going to be alright. I know I’m going to be with Jesus.” Barbara had the security of knowing Jesus as her Savior and tried to live a life that was pleasing to Him. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Robert I. and Mary James, her husband William (Bill) Stevens, two brothers Robert T. James and Gary James. Barbara is survived by her son David (Toni) Stevens of St. Robert, MO, daughter Beth (Loren) Bonds of Oak Ridge, TN, granddaughter Ashley Stevens of St. Louis, MO, grandson Brandon Bonds (Olivia) of LaFollette, TN, Granddaughter Devyn (Cole) Glessner of Clinton, TN, great granddaughter Haisley Glessner, brother William (Bill) James of Danville, PA, sister Becky (Rockie) Sutherland of Danville, PA, sister Peggy Herman (Ed) of Danville, PA, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Celebration of Life services were held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2025, in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Barbara's son, Pastor Dave Stevens officiating. Barbara's son-in-law, Loren Bonds gave a beautiful eulogy and recalled his wonderful memories of Barbara. Mike Freeman led the congregation in singing "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" and sang "I Want to Stroll Over Heaven with You". Becky Lercher sang "Celebrate Me Home". Interment will be held at a later date in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery of Waynesville, MO. Services were under the care and direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert.
