Tiney Oscar Pharris

SFC (Ret) Tiney Oscar Pharris, son of the late Alfred Doyle and Lillie Ruth (Clegg) Pharris, was born June 12, 1929 in Pocatello, Idaho. He attended schools in Alameda and Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School. As a young boy, Tiney was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was also a Boy Scout. As a young man, Tiney worked for the railroad before joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1946. During his time in the Army, Tiney served in Alaska, Germany, France, Italy, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired April 1, 1972 after 24 years of service. He had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. For his faithful service, Tiney was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Overseas Bars (2), and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. On October 30, 1948, Tiney was united in marriage to Helen Ardella Likes in Pocatello, Idaho. They shared over 61 years of marriage together and were blessed with eight children: Robert Dale, Larry Oscar, Edith May, Linda Sue, Jeffery Alan, Brittany Ann, Rose Marie and Lori Lee. After retiring from the military, Tiney was employed as a welder and a lineman. In his spare time, he enjoyed being outdoors fishing, farming and building things. He liked to work puzzles, collect coins and stamps. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Masons and the Eastern Star. Tiney passed away at 3:13 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010 in the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics of Columbia, Missouri at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 13 days. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. Tiney leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Helen Pharris of the home; six children: Robert Dale Pharris of Crocker, MO, Larry Oscar Pharris of Waco, TX, Edith May Dittman of Kaiser, MO, Linda Sue McKinnon of St. Robert, MO, Jeffery Alan Pharris of Eldon, MO and Brittany Ann Pharris of the home; one sister: Gladys Ruth Jenson and two brothers: Orval Ray Pharris and Theodore Arnold Pharris, all of Pocatello, ID; thirteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Tiney was preceded in death by two daughters: Rose Marie Pharris (2009) and Lori Lee Pharris (1978). On February 26, 2010, Tiney’s grandson, Michael Pharris also joined him in eternity. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 4, 2010 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville with CH (LTC) John Bjarnason officiating. The song “Sweet By and By” was played. Serving as escorts were the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Burial with military honors followed in the Main Post Cemetery of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Military honors were provided by the United States Army. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.
