Barbara Isabelle Short

September 21, 1930 - June 22, 2019

Barbara Isabelle (Sifford) Hoffman Short, daughter of the late Herbert M. and Betty (Bepler) Sifford, was born September 21, 1930 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. She passed away at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2019 in the Life Care Center of Waynesville, Missouri having attained the age of 88 years and 9 months. Barbara lived in Somerset, Pennsylvania until the age of five when she moved to Greensburg, Pennsylvania where she attended all her schooling, graduating from Greensburg High School in 1948. Barbara met her first husband, James D. Hoffman, Sr. in Greensburg and married July 1951. They shared 18 years together and were blessed with four children: Kathy, Janice, Jim (deceased) and Rick. The family moved from Pennsylvania to upper New York for one year (1959-1960), James was transferred to San Mateo, California for one year then finally settled in Fremont, California. Barbara and the children moved to Marina, California where she met and married Dean Short at the Fort Ord Chapel in December 1971. In 1976, Dean received orders for Germany, so off they went for three years. Upon return, Dean was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where they eventually settled in Waynesville, Missouri. They were married for almost 19 years when he passed away in 1990. Barbara was a faithful member of the Waynesville United Methodist Church for about 36 years. She was most proud of her employment with the Waynesville Police Department as a dispatcher for several years, retiring in November 1996. In her spare time, she volunteered for Snack in a Pack program, the American Red Cross, Good Samaritan, the thrift store at Fort Leonard Wood and the Waynesville / St. Robert Senior Center. She also loved her two cats, crafts, oil painting, music, plays, going to Branson, her porch where she watched the wildlife activity, gardening, bowling and ELVIS! She was also involved with VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2019 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Pastor Danny Graves officiating. The song “I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me was played and soloist Becky Lercher sang “Jerusalem”. Serving as escorts were family and friends. Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park.
