SFC (Ret) Darl Delone Meyer

SFC (Ret) Darl Delone Meyer, son of the late Emery Dale and Florence Mildred (Altman) Meyer, was born December 17, 1934 in Plumcreek, Pennsylvania. He was raised in Pennsylvania and graduated from high school. At the age of 17, Darl enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his retirement in 1977. During his military career, Darl earned several awards and commendations; some of which include: National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Driver Badge w/bar, Expert Mechanic Badge, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation w/palm, Army Commendation Medal, Specialist Qualification Badge M16, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Service Star and Meritorious Service Medal. He had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. On May 7, 1960, Darl was united in marriage to the love of his life, Leona Maybelle Bolin in St. Marys, Kansas. They shared over 47 years of marriage together before she preceded him in death on January 27, 2008. They were blessed with five children: Don, Dan, Dale, Darl Duane “Bub”, and an infant daughter. Darl Duane and their infant daughter preceded Darl in death. After coming to the Fort Leonard Wood area in 1976 and retiring from the military in 1977, Darl began working for Fields Hardware and Gas and also later for Bales Construction. In his spare time, Darl enjoyed being outdoors while hunting, fishing or just watching squirrels. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Darl passed away Friday, December 25, 2015, in Life Care of Waynesville having attained the age of 81 years. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. Darl leaves to cherish his memory, three sons, Don Meyer (Lindsay Rush) of Jefferson City, MO, Dan Meyer (Irma) of New Braunfels, TX, and Dale Meyer (Sybille) of Butzach, Germany; his daughter-in-law, Theresa Meyer of Waynesville, MO; ten grandchildren: Sylvia Meyer of New Llanos, LA, Mike Meyer (Melissa) of Independence, MO, Daniel Sester (Julia) of Butzach, Germany, Jennifer Ellis (Billy) of Dixon, MO, Dana Strain (Brian) of Crocker, MO, Samantha Blue (Joseph) of Harker Heights, TX, Jessica Meyer (Robert Beers) of Waynesville, MO, and Michelle, J.J. and Rico Gonzales all of Texas; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Erwood Meyer of Marlow, OK; three sisters, Dorothy Fleming of Connorsville, IN, Joan Keeling of Elderton, PA, and Sandra Hill of Garden City, MI; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, wife and two children, Darl was preceded in death by three siblings: Judith Fulmer, Ronald Meyer and Shirley Conell. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Rev. Danny Graves officiating. The songs “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Go Rest High on that Mountain” were played. Serving as escorts were the United States Army. Burial with military honors followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery of Waynesville. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Darl Meyer and may be left at the funeral home.
