LaVerne R. McCray

September 2, 1922 - October 30, 2017

LaVerne R. McCray, daughter of the late Enoch and Victoria Wimberley, was born September 2, 1922 in Springfield, Missouri where she grew up. LaVerne was united in marriage to Jesse McCray and to this union three children were born: Barbara, Shirley and William. Shortly after LaVerne and Jesse were married, they moved to California for a short time and came back to the Waynesville area for many years. LaVerne moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1985 to be close to her family. In her spare time, LaVerne loved to cook, bake and take care of her home and family. LaVerne passed away Monday, October 30, 2017, in the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri having attained the age of 95 years. She will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved her. LaVerne is survived by her two daughters, Barbara McCray and Shirley Brewer, both of Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Wanda Cooper (Ben) of Bella Vista, Arkansas; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband: Jesse; son: William “Bill” McCray; two sisters: Maxine Wimberley and Dorothy Lawson; and three brothers: Marvin Enoch Wimberley, Jr., and Ralph and Dan Wimberley. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Pastor Chris Hendrix officiating. The song “Amazing Grace” was played and serving as escorts were family and friends. Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery of Waynesville. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of LaVerne McCray and may be left at the funeral home.
