MAJ (Ret) Norman Edward James was born September 1, 1955 to Samuel Glenn and Frances Louise (Maupin) James in Kansas City, Missouri. He was married to Christine Frieda (Ketterer) on October 8, 2011. Norman was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America, American Legion Post 331, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3168, and an Eagle Scout. He served his country in the United States Army from 1977 to 1996 reaching the rank of Major. In 2009 he came out of retirement to serve a tour in Afghanistan, re-retiring in 2010. During his service, he received the Rifle M-16 Expert Qualification Badge/Hand Grenade, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge, Meritorious Service Medal (4), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2), National Defense Service Medal (2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Norman passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in the Lake Ozark Hospital in Osage Beach, Missouri having attained the age of 61 years. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife: Christine James of Dixon, MO; mother: Frances James of Versailles, KY; two children: Shawna Brake (Ray) of Waynesville, MO and Robert James (Leslie) of Clever, MO; four grandchildren: Wesley and Ashton Brake and Brandon and Grayson James; one sister: Audrey Arnold (John) of Lexington, KY; two nephews: James and Jacob Arnold; other relatives and friends. Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2017 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Chaplain (CPT) Jeffrey Crispin officiating. The songs “American Soldier” by Toby Keith, “How Great Thou Art” and “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” by Joey & Rory were played. Serving as escorts were the United States Army. Burial with military honors followed in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery of Waynesville with military honors being provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of MAJ (Ret) James to the Wounded Warrior Project and may be left at the funeral home.
