Virginia L. Thomas

July 23, 1926 - January 12, 2017

Virginia Louise Thomas, daughter of the late James Roy and Helen Lucille (Smith) Spargur, was born July 23, 1926 in Queen City, Missouri where she grew up and attended school. As a student, Virginia was very active in school life. She played basketball and was also in the school band, playing the trombone. On June 6, 1943, Virginia was united in marriage to Luther Clayton Thomas in New London, Connecticut. They shared nearly 59 years of marriage together and were blessed with two children: Beverly and Donnie. In the late 1940’s, Virginia and Luther moved to Waynesville, Missouri. Luther owned and operated several businesses and Virginia helped him in many of those businesses. In her spare time, Virginia was a very active person. She enjoyed walking six miles a day and doing water aerobics. She was an avid reader and enjoyed researching her family history. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Virginia was a member of the AUSA and enjoyed hosting dinners for the organization. She also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program and was co-owner with her daughter, Beverly in the catering business known as B & V Catering. Virginia passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017, in the Sunrise Assisted Living of Buckhead of Atlanta, Georgia having attained the age of 90 years. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved her. Virginia leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter: Beverly Thomas Stroud and husband Robert Stroud, Sr. of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren: Robert Stroud, Jr., Alison Stroud Baine, Debbie Thomas, Donna Cottrell and Amanda Cornelison and husband Monty; five great grandchildren: Olive Baine, Angelica Cottrell, George Cottrell, Jr., Danielle Thomas and Logan Cornelison; daughter-in-law: Joyce Thomas of Dixon, MO; other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Clayton Thomas and her son, Donald Eugene Thomas. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Rev. Christopher Hendrix officiating. Soloist Becky Lercher sang “Amazing Grace”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and led the congregation in singing “Hymn of Promise”. Serving as escorts were Bob Stroud, Rob Stroud, Danielle Thomas, Angelica Cottrell and George Cottrell. Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery of Waynesville, Missouri.
